Where the Message Falls Short
Personally, I’ve been made painfully aware of my own ignorance which is reflected best in messages I’ve taught our girls. I have always taught them that skin color is no different than eye color, hair color, body height, etc. That it is just something we are born with – something that we don’t choose, and that it’s senseless to judge someone (positively or negatively) for having/being something they had absolutely no choice having/being. I thought it was a loving message to teach, but I now realize it falls so short. It completely glosses over the exquisite array of cultures and histories, and sadly, it dismisses the flagrant oppression of our Black brothers and sisters.
I suspect this is just the beginning of a painful look in the mirror. So much to learn. And as I know better, I will do better. Thank you, Maya Angelou, for that gracious message I’ve leaned on countless times throughout my life.
