no ugly shells

A Story of How Judgment Blocked My Beach Bliss

in search of UGLY

I tried to collect ugly shells during my last visit to Florida, but I couldn’t.

The “uglier” I thought a shell was at first, the more captivated I was immediately by its curves, holes, cracks, lumps, and carvings. I marveled. I fell in love. After a short time, I lost complete interest in the “pretty” shells.

Eventually I found myself thinking about shells like people, resenting the “perfect” ones that everyone wants to photograph or bring home for decoration. I felt righteous. I no longer wanted anything to do with the “perfect” shells. I was swollen with pride for loving the unlovable, and I was disgusted with all of the superficial people for missing out on these exquisite shells that have a story to tell about what cracked them and how those holes, lumps and swirly indentations formed.

THE HEART SPEAKS

Then it hit me. I wasn’t having a better ocean experience, and I certainly hadn’t expanded my appreciation of shells. I had only shifted my judgment. I was still rejecting some shells, and the animosity I felt toward “flawless” shells and “superficial” people didn’t feel great.

This realization helped me to see that, in fact, there really are no ugly shells, and there are no pretty shells. There are no villain or victim shells. There simply are shells – of all shapes, sizes, and colors. None are better or worse. I started noticing and enjoying all of them collectively as they contributed to the whole landscape. (I even played with them one afternoon – sorting and photographing them.)

As I let go of my pride and judgment, I felt the joy and deep gratitude for the spectacular ocean, its toys, and all of its rich metaphors.
